NEW DRINKING WATER DIRECTIVE
Challenges due to new lead limit
The new Drinking Water Directive transposes the European Drinking Water Directive into German law and poses major challenges for distributors. The lead limit will fall from 10 to 5 micrograms per liter by 12 January 2028 at the latest, forcing manufacturers to make extensive adjustments. Products that exceed this value may then no longer be used. Switching to lead-free materials not only ensures compliance with regulations, but also prepares for possible future bans, such as those imposed by the REACH regulation. It is therefore essential for companies to think about alternative materials and production processes at an early stage.

The EU is currently discussing whether lead should be included in Annex 14 of the REACH Regulation, which would entail a ban on lead. This also poses considerable challenges for companies in the lead processing industry in the EU.
